Microsoft Office XP
Category: Abandoned Office versions
XP Microsoft Office System, also known as Microsoft Office XP - a version of the Microsoft Office suite, prepared as a successor to Microsoft Office 2000. Office XP suite consisted of as many as 7 editions.

The new features of Office XP include smart tags - a selection-based search function that recognizes different types of text in a document so users can perform additional actions; a task pane interface that consolidates popular menu bar commands on the right side of the screen for quick access; new document collaboration capabilities, support for MSN and SharePoint groups; and integrated handwriting and speech recognition functions. In Office XP, Microsoft has introduced several features to address the reliability issues observed in previous Office versions. Office XP also introduces separate applications for image processing, document scanning and Clip Organizer. Office Assistant (commonly known as "Clippy"), which was introduced in Office 97 and commonly denigrated by users, is disabled in Office XP by default; this change was a key element of Microsoft's promotional campaign for Office XP.

Office XP is incompatible with Windows 95, and is the last package to support Windows 98/98 SE and Windows ME.

Office XP received mainly positive reviews after its release, and critics praised its collaborative functions, document protection and recovery functions and smart tags; however, handwriting recognition and speech recognition functions were criticised and were mostly seen as inferior to similar offers from competitors.
